Hoverfly (Diptera: Syrphidae) diversity in Tapada da Ajuda, Lisbon - a preliminary study
Hoverflies are holometabolic insects, whose adults are pollinators feeding on nectar and pollen. Frequently, they are
confused with wasps, bees and bumblebees. In the larval stage, some of them prey other insects, specially aphids
(Hemiptera), and others are saprophagous. For this reason, they are important biological control agents. In this study,
we carried out the prospection and specific identification of hoverflies in four habitats in Tapada da Ajuda (olive grove, a
field of Apiaceae, herbaceous vegetation near Lagoa Branca and plum orchard), between March and May 2017. Hoverfly
adults were mostly captured with an entomologic net, but also with jar and plastic bags. A preliminary evaluation on
the importance of ecologic infrastructure fava bean inter-row in the plum orchard was also performed. For this purpose,
we observed fava plants and plum trees, collecting eggs, larvae and pupae of hoverflies that we reared in the laboratory
until the emergence of the adult of hoverfly or parasitoid. A total of 12 species were identified, being the most frequent
and abundant Episyrphus balteatus and Sphaerophoria scripta. Species richness was higher in the Apiaceae field although
this habitat was sampled only during the last fortnight of the study. In the hoverfly immature collected in the plum
orchard we detected hymenopteran parasitoids belonging to Diplazontinae and Pteromalidaeinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The bee fauna (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila) of allotments in downtown Lisbon
Original ArticleIn the last ten years, a growing number of studies have focused on urban green areas as potential refuges for biodiversity,
where private gardens, urban parks and green roofs have relatively high diversities of wild bees. However, the western
Mediterranean is still poorly studied and is a biodiversity hotspot that is already suffering the consequences of climate change.
It is essential to rectify this and understand how urban settings can support biodiversity. In this context, this study provides an
assessment of the taxonomic and functional composition of bee assemblages in three allotments in downtown Lisbon, Portugal.
Using only an entomological net, we collected 202 specimens from April to July 2018, belonging to fi ve families, 20 genera and 58
species, of which six are rare species in Portugal and nine fi rst records for the Lisbon district. Megachilidae was the most diverse
family, comprising 15 species, while Apidae was the most abundant family. Most of the species identifi ed were solitary and had a
generalist pollen diet, with a low incidence of social and parasitic speciesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Imagej's contribution to left ventricular segmentation in myocardial perfusion imaging
Introduction: The Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) is a non-invasive image test that allows the assessment of perfusion, function, and viability of the Left Ventricle (LV). The quantitative parameters obtained post-reconstruction requires an accurate segmentation of the LV. ImageJ is an open-source software that provides segmentation techniques that may contribute to the segmentation of the LV in the MPI. The purpose of this study was to study the influence of the different segmentation methods provided by ImageJ, in MPI, depending on the administered activity. Material and methods: We carried out an experimental research with 4 MPI studies simulated with 275, 385, 500 and 750 Bq/voxel in the myocardium, whose short-axis (SA) slices were segmented with ImageJ by the threshold default, OTSU, and k-means Plugin Toolkit methods (k=2, k=3). To analyze the most appropriate segmentation method, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each short-axis (SA) slice was calculated, in accordance with the slices obtained from the software Quantitative Perfusion Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography® (QPS®) and by manual segmentation using ImageJ. To analyze the SNR with ImageJ and QPS® segmentation methods in the same simulated study, and to compare with the same segmentation method in different simulated studies, the Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied. Results and discussion: The method k-means with k=3 is the most suitable method for the segmentation of the LV, regardless of the administered activity. Conclusion: This study may contribute to the clinical implementation of open-source based segmentation methods of the LV in MPI, according to the activity in the myocardium.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
positivas perante a inclusão.
NEE devem frequentar a escola regular.
The study identified the attitudes and perceptions of parents towards the
inclusion of their children with special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream
education, also describing the advantages and disadvantages that parents identified in
the interaction between peers with and without SEN. Likewise, the perceptions of the
children without SEN towards inclusion were evaluated and the relation between
attitudes and perceptions of parents and children towards inclusion was tried to
understand.
One hundred twenty two parents/guardians and twelve students without SEN,
aged eight and nine years old, participated in the study. A mixed methodology was used
in the study. The data was obtained from a questionnaire addressed to parents/
guardians, and from two focus groups where the students without SEN participated.
Results indicated that young, female and high educational attainment parents
showed more positive attitudes towards inclusion.
The majority of parents with children with SEN and parents with children who
out of school friendship relations with children with SEN, agreed with the inclusion and
its benefits, thus having more inclusive attitudes, contrary to the parents of students
without SEN and whose children do not have friends with SEN. Parents pointed more
advantages for students without SEN than for children with SEN.
Concluded that the majority of children without SEN perceived children with
SEN as someone who has a disease, which is different from the others and has learning
difficulties. Most of the participants thought that students with SEN should attend
regular school.
Results of this study also indicated that the attitudes of parents and peers are
related to the knowledge and contact with disabilities, also suggesting the existence of a relation between attitudes and perceptions of parents and children towards inclusion
This dissertation will evaluate the importance of an expatriation process in relation to the level of intercultural adjustment of the expatriate, since intercultural adjustment is a key factor for the success of expatriation. The concepts inherent to the theme, such as the definition of expatriate and cultural adjustment, are discussed in a first part of the dissertation - the theoretical framework. For the empirical study, a qualitative research methodology is chosen based on nine interviews, eight for expatriates and one for a Human Resources professional, through a sampling of convenience. After analyzing the content of the interviews, the third and last part of the dissertation seeks to discuss the results. After the discussion of the results, it is possible to conclude that there is a relationship between the way the expatriation process is designed and the level of adjustment of the expatriate: when there is a careful process, from recruitment, preparation and follow-up, to repatriation , there is a good level of cultural adjustment of the expatriate; when the process does not pay attention to the promotion of intercultural adjustment in the different stages, the risk of intercultural maladjustment is high
Citizen initiatives in the post-welfare state
Recently we have seen the emergence of citizen-led community initiatives and civic enterprises, taking over governmental tasks in providing public services in various sectors, such as energy, care, landscape maintenance, and culture. This phenomenon can be explained by a renewed interest in community, place, and 'local identity'; the erosion of the welfare state; the privatization of public services; a re-emergence of the social economy; and tensions between 'bottom-up' initiatives and the changing role of the state. The co-production of governments and initiatives can potentially result in a shift from government-led to community-led planning. This, however, raises questions about their innovative potential, the democratic consequences, and the potential roles of governments in enabling these societal dynamics. This article discusses these issues theoretically, illustrated with empirical examples from Portugal, the Netherlands, and Wales, in a context of uncertainty regarding the future of the traditional European welfare state.</p
Neste domínio, a
A integração
A terceira parte aborda a questão do lugar do
rural/urbano.
The theme of this thesis is related with the qualification of the
development paths in rural areas, through the new centrality
of the environmental issues. In this domain, the thesis relies
on the contribution of the social sciences, sociology in
particular, for the understanding of the social representations
on the processes associated with the environment protection
and with the development promotion in the rural areas, taking
into account the transformations that they underwent along
the last decades.
It is argued that the marginalisation or the weak integration of
the Portuguese rural areas – in particular the ones that we can
call remote – in the socio-economic development models
prevailing in the last decades, tends to place them nowadays
as central areas in the context of the emergent development
paradigms and in consolidation process, in which the
environment appears as a fundamental aspect. The present
integration and valorisation of the rural areas are above all
external processes to those same areas. For this reason
these processes tend not to be understood and accepted as
valid by a fair part of the rural populations. This fact leads
potentially to conflicts, supported on several representations,
practices and racionalities, either in view of the environment,
or in view of the socio-economic development.
The discussion about the opportunity and the forms of
integration of the rural areas in the present development
models corresponds also to the contemporary debate
concerning the processes associated with globalisation, the
transformations of the modern societies and the emergency of
postmodernity.
The thesis is structured in four main parts. In the first one,
based on the bibliographical review, we characterise the
present debate on the emergency of the environment as a
social and political issue in the contemporary societies in
general and in the Portuguese society in particular. In the
second part, still based on the literature review, we analyse
the passage of the rural areas from food producers to
guardians of the natural environment, taking into account their
main transformations, either in the ambit of the western
societies, or in the Portuguese context. The third part deals
with the question of the environment’s role in the development
politics in general and the rural development ones in
particular, based on the literature review and on the analysis
of the legislation and the programs and measures conceived
and implemented for the rural areas. Finally, in the fourth part,
we present the empirical research, based on the analysis of
the representations and practices in view of the environmental
protection and the socio-economic development processes, of
the residents, visitors and political-administrative and
economic entities of the ‘Serra da Freita’ and the Natural Park
of Montesinho areas.
The main conclusions of the thesis reveal that there is a rural
to live in and a rural to visit. In other words, we bring to the
fore that the representations and practices of the residents
and visitors of both areas studied are not coincident, causing
the emergence of two parallel universes and of a new
rural/urban dichotomy. The research also reveals that the
residents’ representations and practices are not considered in
the decision-making processes related to the elaboration and implementation of programs and measures for the rural areas.
All the more, it is observed that the visitors’ representations
and practices concerning those areas tend to superimpose
upon the residents ones in the programs and measures that
have in view the rural space in Portugal. In the face of this, we
infer the need of a management model of the diversities, with
capacity to encompass the different needs, interests and
aspirations of the residents and visitors of the rural areas. It is
recommended that such a model should be based on a
permanent negotiation among the several social and
institutional actors in presence. We also propose that the rural
development, if it intends to be an effective process, must not
surpass the interests and the needs of the populations whom
it is addressed in the first place
